Unveiling New Sansad Bhawan: 28 May 2023- A promise of fostering democratic discourse, strengthening the legislative process, and serving as an enduring emblem of India’s democratic spirit.
India, the world’s largest democracy, is set to witness a significant milestone in its political landscape with the construction of a new Parliament building. This architectural marvel will not only serve as the epicenter of democratic governance but will also embody the nation’s aspirations for a modern and inclusive future. This iconic structure is not only a symbol of India’s development but also reflects its commitment to demographic values and the aspirations of its people.
Our Prime Minister, Shri Narender Modi Ji, inaugurated the new building of Parliament (Sansad Bhawan) and placed ‘SENGOL’ as a symbol of power transfer to India from the British. Being an architectural marvel, the structure features a contemporary design including spacious interiors and an abundance of natural light. It has a built-up area of approximately 65000 sq.m. It is triangular in shape which ensures effective and efficient utilization of space and thus includes a larger Lok Sabha as well as Rajya Sabha Hall, while also providing more flexible spaces for legislative activities, committee meetings and public consultations. The new Parliament building is a flagship project of sustainable development. The use of renewable energy sources, rainwater harvesting, effective waste management techniques, advanced materials and construction techniques ensures durability and also energy-efficient systems minimizes the building’s ecological footprint. Green building principles have been incorporated throughout the process of design and construction and thus, it stands as a Platinum-rated green building. The new Sansad Bhawan incorporates the state-of-the-art-facilities to enhance productivity. It is well-equipped with digital infrastructure and modern communication systems enabling information sharing. The infrastructure of the new Parliament building acts as a powerful symbol of India’s democratic progress, representing the voice of the people and the strength of the country. It consists of three galleries at the public entrances- Sangeet Gallery showcasing dance and music traditions of India, Sthapthya Gallery exhibiting architectural heritage of the nation and Shilp Gallery depicting different handicrafts of the country. The new Parliament building is a reflection of India’s diversity and unity. It comprises a central dome inspired by the iconic Ashoka Chakra, India’s national emblem, representing the eternal cycle of time and continuity. It pays homage to India’s rich cultural heritage. It preserves and relocates historical artifacts and artworks from the old Parliament building ensuring their integration in the new Sansad Bhawan. It encapsulates India’s aspirations for progress while honoring and paying respect to its heritage roots.
